Peachy GREEN

by Heather on September 29, 2009

Last night I double checked to make sure my alarm was set on beep beep beep instead of the dead air radio.  It worked and I got up at 5:40 for my 50 minute tempo run.

I also tried something new – a Camelbak!  I ordered it two weeks ago and it finally arrived.  Check it out!

I wanted to start training with it – the week before my first longer-then-5k race.  My boss Jim and I are running a 7.3 mile race on Cape Cod this coming Sunday.  We both thought this would be excellent half-marathon training.  Although I may regret this – Friday and Saturday I will be on a Student Government retreat – sleeping in a cabin, working late…there will be little relaxing before my longest run ever.

It was hard running with the Camelbak – I found it hard to regulate my breathing in a way get the water out of the straw.  It will take some time to get used to.

Before my run, I enjoyed 1/2 of a Cliff Z-Bar Chocolate Chip.

Upon returning, I enjoyed a smoothie inspired by my co-worker and fellow blog writer Liza.  A few weekends ago, she made a smoothie with her two daughters using papaya, strawberry, banana, no-sugar added apple juice and ice.  While at the grocery store this weekend I picked up some frozen papaya and frozen peaches and tried them today.  In the blender went:

  • 1/2 a frozen banana (check out my reduced banana consumption)
  • frozen peaches
  • frozen papaya
  • handful of spinach
  • One packet Vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast
  • Stonyfield Farm Fat Free French Vanilla Yogurt
  • Little bit of skim milk
  • Oats

Interesting combination huh?

Verdict – tastes like peaches.  Matt tried a sip and said it tasted like peaches AND spinach.  I liked it.  A little thick – probably should have added more milk.

Have you ever tried spinach in a smoothie?

I’ve never tried spinach in a smoothie. I’m actually not a smoothie fan. They taste great, but I’m always hungry five minutes later.

Awesome Camelbak! I want to order one, but I don’t think I can run with something on my back. It looks uncomfortable. I need to figure something out though because I’ve increased my mileage significantly over the past few months, but I don’t carry any water with me. If I run on the treadmill I’m fine because I can keep a bottle on the treadmill, but outside I dehydrate on long distances. The camelbak is an option, but is it uncomfortable?

Hi Melissa – I have the same problem. The Camelback wasn’t uncomfortable but I did feel slow today and had a harder time breathing – I couldn’t tell if it was because of the Camelbak or just a bad run. I don’t think I am going to run with it this weekend but really try to train with it for longer runs. I think I just need time to get used to it – it has to be better than carrying a water bottle!

What’s your fave Z bar flavor? I love choc chip!
I really like spinach in smoothies. I advise against using kale though–way too bitter for me!

I think its a tossup between Chocolate Chip and Honey Graham – I just ordered some Spooky Smores though. I can imagine Kale would not bet the best in a smoothie – but I love the spinach!

Thanks for the link nod, Heather! Loved the smoothie! I’ll have to try the spinach add next time!
