A Fancy Frittata

by Heather on September 16, 2009

Ever since our last frittata, I have been craving another one.  Tonight was the night.

On Sunday, Matt had grated the cheese for the frittata, so it left us with only a few veggies to prepare.  In this frittata went:

  • 4 egg whites
  • 3 eggs
  • almost one complete container of spinach (sautéed first)
  • mushrooms (sautéed with the spinach)
  • garlic (sautéed with the spinach and mushrooms)
  • scallions
  • basil
  • tomato
  • cheddar and swiss cheese

Look at this delicious masterpiece – this is about a quarter of the frittata

Matt and I both agreed that this was a great frittata – we even talked about how this is almost better then a quiche; easier to make and less heavy.  I love the quick preparation – a quiche is a weekend night meal for us!

The mushrooms tasted very meaty tonight – it almost tasted like a mild sausage in the frittata.

For a fruit on the side (since I figured there were a lot of veggies inside the frittata)

Matt and I split this orange and apple.

September 16, 2009:  Turn down your hot water heater

According to the U.S. Department of Energy,

For each 10ºF reduction in water temperature, you can save between 3%–5% in energy costs.

I am all about saving the environment and money!  I braved my way into our scary utility closet tonight and found our hot water heater thermostat – except that it didn’t have a thermostat – it had this.  Sorry for the blurry photo, there isn’t the best lighting in my utility closet.

Our water heater had been set on the little red spot – I turned it down one notch – but Matt and I also talked about turning our hot water heater to vacation next time we go away for a few days!

What is your hot water heater set at?

I have no idea what my hot water is set at! I wonder if I can even change it in my apartment? That is a really good point to bring up. We’ll be buying a house next year, and these are the kinds of things I will be able to control.

Hi Shannon – I agree – I have no idea why my hot water heater didn’t have a temperature gauge like I was reading about….some things to think about when buying a house though!
