About

Thank you for stopping by Running Leaner and Greener!  My name is Heather and I started this blog as a way to chronicle 3 goals of mine: increase my speed and endurance through running, try new healthy recipes (and cook more), and change my lifestyle to be more sustainable.  By blogging, I hope to hold myself more accountable and inspire others to make some of the lifestyle changes I aspire to make.

If you have any questions or comments, please email Heather at runleangreen@gmail.com

About Me:
I grew up in suburban New Jersey and now live in southeastern Massachusetts with my husband Matt (we met in college and even got married there) and our fish Sammy.  I am a college administrator working long and crazy hours – I help students develop their leadership skills and help them plan events for the campus.  Currently I am working on a second Master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Sustainable Community Development – I hope to one day combine my love of working with college students and living more sustainably.

Running
For as long as I can remember, I have had a goal to run a 5k.  I have started numerous training programs and always given up after a few week – I always let SOMETHING get in the way or found some excuse to stop.  I ran my first 5k in September 2008 and was hooked.  I have now run a few more 5ks, a 10k, and 2 half-marathons.  Learn more about my race recaps here

Leaner
I enjoy food – good food – food you want to savor and never forget the taste of.  I also love to cook and bake and try new recipes.  One of my goals is to try new ingredients – especially new fruits, vegetables, beans and grains.  Through this blog, I want to share the new recipes I try as I expand my culinary skills.  My two favorite foods are probably lobster and chocolate chip cookies.  Fact about me:  I am allergic to ALL nuts and seeds (including sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.) – even coconut!

Greener
I have been interested in saving the environment since I was a child.  In fact, I went to college originally as an Environmental Science major.  As many college students do, I switched my major but did minor in Environmental Studies.  My last goal with this blog is to discuss small ways you can change your daily routines to make our earth a little cleaner and greener for a healthier future.

A member of Plato’s Harvest CSa suggested taking a look at your blog. When I saw your goal of running a 1/3 marathon, I had to write with this siuggestion. Get the Non Runner Marathon Trainer (http://www.amazon.com/Non-Runners-Marathon-Trainer-David-Whitsett/dp/1570281823) It’s a fabulous book and helped me and my brother run our first marathon – the Cape Copd Marathon – when I was hitting my thirties. I stuck to it’s suggestions pretty closely and ended up not only finishing the marathon, but, suprisingly, being able to walk the day after! I wasn’t as sor as I expected to be.

Good luck!

HI Heather,
I work with Matt at BSC in HR and have been reading your blog through facebook for about a month now. I was wondering if theres a place you can go to, to see all your recipies you’ve posted. I decided to make the egg muffins and had a hard time finding the post that had the recipe. I may be totally blind and I’m sure theres any easier way to find recipes…..help!!!! Thanks for the inspiration to start eating healthier, I’m also turning 30 soon and I want to start my 30′s feeling good! Wish me luck !!

Hey! I just found your blog and saw one of you older entries about a visit you made to Better Bean and that caught my eye because I’m prettttyyy sure that is the Better Bean in my hometown of Bridgewater! Funny enough I have never been to the cafe but an old friend of mine worked there! Well, I just wanted to comment because it really is a small world! I’m a runner also and I wish you the best of luck @ Worcester! When I visit my parents(I live in NH for now), I’ll shoot you an email and maybe we could get together for a run!

Heather,

So excited to find your blog! I read a couple blogs that you have listed in your blogroll, but it’s great to find all that in a student affairs person! Hooray! Looking forward to reading!

Hi I’m so glad I found your blog!! I’m pretty sure I’m allergic or at least sensitive to sesame and nuts. How did you figure this out, symptoms? Thanks!!

Thanks Martianne for the recommendation! I just added the book to my amazon wishlist – unfortunately the library doesn’t have it! I am excited to run the 1/2 marathon in January – I will start training soon!

Hi Allison,
I’m glad you are reading the blog! I really appreciate your suggestion and I think in the next few weeks I will probably add a recipes page to the blog to make it easier to search for them. There is a way to use the search feature at the top of the blog but that is definitely not as easy as a separate page.
I know you can eat healthier – its hard to get started but the results are worth it.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions!
Thanks again!
