Epic Fail

by Heather on October 10, 2009

Last night I set out to try something new – Slow Cooker Oats.  I followed a recipe from my cookbook and left my oats cooking overnight.  Because I have a 6 quart slow cooker, and the recipe called for a 3 quart, I put my oats in a CorningWare dish.

I woke up this morning excited to try the Slow Cooker Oats.  This is what it looked like – ummmm…..kinda nasty

I gave it a stir and felt a sigh of relief (there is dried fruit in there)

Portioned into a bowl and sat down to enjoy sample.

BLECH.  This was the most nasty bowl of oats I have ever had.  Both Matt and I agreed this was inedible.  I couldn’t even fathom would could be added to this (besides a cup of sugar) to make it edible.  As much as I hate wasting food, this dish found itself in the trash.

Then Matt decided to make a “good” breakfast – Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes using our favorite mix, Hodgson Mill Instabake.  He added a handful of chocolate chips and one mashed banana to the mix.

Matt arranged the pancakes in a “blog worthy” fashion – there is a plate under there.

I had two pancakes with some raspberry syrup

A much better breakfast!

Have you made any “epic fail” meals lately?

Wow, excellent recovery from the epic fail! Those pancakes look so light and yummy. We use the Hodgson Mill Buckwheat, but the Instabake looks good!

Yes, I made a huge kabocha squash fail recently. I included the skin (someone had recommended) and it was like adding a cup of dirt.

Hi Kristen – I need to try the Buckwheat kind – sorry about your squash – dirt is not so good tasting.

I had a similar slow cooker incident with a chicken recipe. I decided that I can’t trust the “crock pot switches to warm” when it’s done, because it was a blackened mess!!! Any slow cooker recipes you like that can stand the cooking through the long work day? I’d appreciate the suggestions!

Hey Cindy – I’m still working on the Slow Cooker. I am hoping to find some recipes that still taste good after a long day – Matt and I also had some not so good chicken from the slow cooker.

Oh dear! Good call on the pancakes! They look much better! My latest disaster was my attempt at gluten-free pizza dough. That was a sticky mess I couldn’t even work with! I don’t have many disasters like that mainly because I am a wimp in the kitchen and too afraid to try big experiments. I need to get more adventurous! The failures are part of the process :)

I have also had a disaster with pizza dough! I guess you need a few disasters to find the treasures right?
