RACE DAY!
February 19, 2012: 10 mile race – Ran with Matt
Matt and I have been training for this race since the beginning of January when we signed up. I decided I wanted to run this race with Matt and it wasn’t about speed. It was about distance.
Today it was 10 miles.
Matt and I started way too fast. I tried to get him to slow down but he wouldn’t listen. That bit him in the rear about mile 7. It was a very hilly 10 miles – I didn’t expect it to be so hilly and the race was challenging to say the least. A good mile or two was through a gorgeous wildlife preserve – I absolutely loved that part of the race. Most of the race, however, was on busy roads that unfortunately were not closed for such a small race.
The race was a bit disorganized – there was very little information on the website and no email reminders. I had large fears of getting lost – but once the race started, I was amazed at the volunteers who were there at every turn. Water stations were fully stocked and there were 4 throughout the course.
Our end time (according to my Garmin) was 1:48:33 making our average pace 10:51. This was a PR because I have never run a 10 mile race before. Hooray for PRs!
I think Matt and I both realized that we need to run a little bit more often – and probably for longer distances. This was a wake up call for me – I have another half marathon coming up in October that I would like to PR at.
Only time will tell.
