Summer Craving

by Heather on August 6, 2010

I have been harboring a secret for a few weeks now.  I have been craving a hot dog.  Badly.  I tried the vegetarian hot dogs and sadly, I took one bite and they ended up in the trash.  Unfortunately the thought of hot dogs is a tad bit disgusting.  Let’s just leave it at that.

Evan saved the day though – I didn’t realize there were non icky hot dogs out there.  Matt and I took a trip to Whole Foods today to stock up on a few items (lots of beans and tomato sauce) and we purchased a package of Applegate Farms Organic Hot Dogs

IMG_8942I had my hot dog on an Arnolds Whole Wheat Fill Ems.  For a vegetable, I made Kath’s Summer Squash Gratin.  This used up two summer squashes and two zucchinis plus a tomato from the CSA this week.  BONUS.  I love when I find a recipe that makes use of a good chunk of the share.

Kath made the recipe by grilling her vegetables but I used the broiler.  Also, I didn’t salt the tomatoes – I just sliced them and left the slices in an old dish towel to dry out a little.

This hot dog was worth the trip to Whole Foods.  It was delicious and completely satisfied my craving – without any gross thoughts. Matt even loved these hot dogs.

The vegetable gratin was 3/4 gone when I put it away – that is a lot of vegetables consumed.  I used a combination of cheddar and parmesan cheeses and it was excellent.  If you are looking for a great recipe to use your summer veggies – I highly recommend this one.

A trip to the Farmers Market is in my future tomorrow morning – plus breakfast out!

It’s ok to admit you crave hot dogs. I sometimes do too! I always get them when we go to baseball or football games. Without fail. I actually don’t mind the veggie dogs either….as long as I have some good condiments and a whole grain bun to go with it!

Thanks for the squash recipe link. I need a recipe for the squash we are growing in our backyard!
