Tired Tourists

by Heather on July 8, 2010

Matt and I are officially done with being tourists.  It is so hot and humid in Washington that we were exhausted around 5 pm yesterday.

We started and spent most of the day (over 4.5 hours) and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum

IMG_8035 This was a great museum and I recommended it for next time you visit DC.  A very emotionally draining afternoon, but powerful and meaningful.

We walked around for a little while afterwards and saw the Washington Monument

IMG_8042 and then we headed over to the backside of the White House where we spotted Michelle Obama’s garden

IMG_8049 We hung out for a while in a Cosi because it was too hot to walk around.  At 7 pm we made our way to Founding Farmers for our dinner reservation

IMG_8061 Look they are LEED Certified and serve tap water (please disregard me in the reflection!)

We are dedicated to environmentally friendly practices at every turn and are proud to be DC’s first LEED (Gold) certified restaurant. We are a Certified Green RestaurantTM, and we offset our greenhouse gas emissions through Carbonfund.org. While we can’t provide absolution on environmental issues, when it comes to restaurants, you can be confident that Founding Farmers is making a wide and deep commitment across a spectrum of important topics to help preserve the earth.

IMG_8062 We each started with an appetizer

I had fried green tomatoes and Matt had blue cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped dates.  Sadly the fried green tomatoes were not the best I have ever had – they were lacking in flavor.  Matt said he was glad he tried the dates but it was probably not something he would get again.

Check out the water bottle at each table

IMG_8065 Love the idea of the milk bottle!

For dinner I ordered a grilled vegetable sandwich

IMG_8073The sandwich contained: tomato, grilled red pepper, eggplant and squash – plus some lettuce.  It was a great sandwich – the vegetables tasted fresh and were grilled to perfection.  I also ate a few of the chips as well.

Matt got the butchers cut for the day – steak rubbed with coffee and coriander

IMG_8075 The steak had a great flavor but was cooked a bit too long.

For dessert, Matt ordered a Red Velvet Cake – I was stuffed but managed to find room for a few bites

IMG_8078 That vanilla ice cream was some of the best I have ever had.  You could see the specs of vanilla – and it was made on site.  The cake was ok but the cream cheese frosting was excellent.

I was so full when we left!

Today we are heading back to Massachusetts – I hope the heat has broken up there.

What a trip! I’m glad you survived the heat. It’s brutal here too. Have a safe trip home. We’ll have to get together again soon :)

I think it’s so hard to be a good tourist in the nasty heat, you know? But I want to go to Washington DC so bad I haven’t been in years and your post makes me want to go even more because it reminds me of the touristy stuff I want to do. The heat is getting only slightly better here but I think you missed the worst of it (and by missed I mean had it way worse in DC haha)
